Lesson 3.6- PRAGMATISM

PRAGMATISM
o   asserts that the test of truth lies in its practical consequences and that the purpose of thinking is to arrive at the general purpose of conduct.
Pragmatism
·       Experience determines knowledge.
·       If an idea works then it is true, but not all truths works. It cannot be the ultimate criterion of truth.

PRAGMATISM IN EDUCATION
·       Education is a social process  that should be flexible and always have an objective in mind.

·       Education is the growth in the ability to learn from experience and to make good decisions based on that experience because humankind is ultimately responsible for upbringing order to the universe.
·       Education is the process  that looks for the past for guidance, choosing  the ideas that work and apply for the situation of today, solving problems intelligently rather than automatically relying on tradition.

CURRICULUM
·       The pragmatic curriculum focuses on learning experiences in a curriculum that is diversified and problem solving; not fragmented or compartmentalized.

ROLE OF THE TEACHER
·       To provide an open ended opportunity for study in an environment that allows the child to think and act intelligently in order to test ideas and skills.
·       The teachers are the guides in the learning process, which meets children at their level of ability.
·       Teachers therefore must have sufficient knowledge of a subject to be able to break it down into parts for students to study.
·       The teacher is tasked to plan with the class in order to solve individual or group problems.
